Reflection Questions for the End of the Year
According to Nature, the end of the year is for taking a break. Mother Nature drops everything. She slows to a stop and rests deeply. I’d love nothing more than to follow Nature’s lead right about now.
But, around here, the end of the year feels more chaotic than calm. Right now my house is filled with the energy of a 7yo waiting for Christmas morning. He’s literally bouncing off the walls as he counts down the days. His enthusiasm is sweet and I wouldn’t wish this time away. I know it won’t last forever.
END OF YEAR PARADOX
I’m in the paradox of savoring the delight and energy of the holidays at home with my people and longing to align with the quiet slowness of the winter season. I know I won’t get two weeks curled on the couch with a favorite new book this year. But with intention I can take a few minutes for reflection that feels nourishing and supportive.
Do you share my longing to be more quiet and peaceful during the winter days ahead? If so, I invite you to join me in a simple meditative reflection.
MEDITATIVE REFLECTION
As we come to the end of 2020 I offer this list of questions as a prompt for reflection. My recommendation is that you carve out a few quiet minutes with your journal and pen to work with the questions as a kind of end of year meditation.
It is my hope that this exercise will shed light on your journey through 2020. And, upon reflection, offer some guidance for the year to come.
Ask the questions:
What has happened this year?
What have I done? Accomplished?
What is left undone?
What is released, unnecessary anymore?
How have I succeeded?
How have I failed?
And, how am I measuring success and failure?
Beyond what I have done, who have I been?
What have I gained?
What have I lost?
Who has entered my life?
Who has left my life?
What have I learned?
What have I forgotten?
What do I want to keep?
What am I ready to release?
How have I loved?
How have I shown my love?
How have I treated those I love the most dearly?
Upon reflection:
Why was I given this year?
How do I want to begin the next one?
