Tending your Time
A quick note for you today - snow days, sick days, and extra time solo-parenting have eaten my writing time this week….
On Monday my husband started filming his movie. He didn’t start filming a movie - he started filming his movie. It’s his. It’s the one he wants to make. He hired writers, a director, a producer, a cast and all of his friends on crew. And they started fifteen days of filming on Monday morning.
I’m pretty amazed and inspired.
Now’s the time
A few weeks ago we were talking about his motivation. As he wrapped up what he was saying he added: “It’s like: Now or Never….”
“No,” I said. “It’s: What are you waiting for?”
“Yes! That’s it exactly!” he said.
There’s a big difference in those two. ‘Now or never’ implies that you’re running out of time. You’d better get moving because your opportunities can disappear at a moment’s notice. ‘What are you waiting for’ reminds you that you may actually have more time than you think. But there’s no time like the present to move in the direction of your dreams. There’s no need to push your creativity and joy into the future. Not when you could start living your authentic life right now.
So maybe this note is for you if you’ve been considering deepening your practice or starting a new project this year. Maybe it’s for you if you’re ready to explore what living authentically would be fore you.
Just wondering: What are you waiting for?
Or Now’s NOT the Time
Or maybe this note finds you in my role this month - holding life down while he manifests his dream. (No worries, he’ll do the same for me when I teach yoga in Italy this June - we trade off)
If you’re in my seat and someone says “What are you waiting for?” you might want to bite their head off. Instead of cannibalism I offer you the reminder that you can move on your own schedule. Just because the calendar says it’s time to start new projects doesn’t mean it’s a good time for you.
Personally, I’ve decided that my New Year officially starts in February. That’s because the movie is taking up a lot of this month, and then I’m teaching a yoga retreat February 2-4. I can’t even begin to consider my next steps until February 5th.
It was really bugging me to hear the New Year’s hype, until I let myself make the shift to a Feb 5th New Year (maybe I’m aligning with my Celtic ancestors). Now I feel so much more relaxed; my energy is freed up. Now I can direct it to my kids, our home life, and retreat planning.
A Sacred Resource
Time is one our of most sacred resources. When we build a loving and attentive relationship with it we feel resourced from the inside out. And clearly, there’s a lot more to say about how to mend and tend your relationship with it. But… right now, I’m gonna tend mine and wrap up.
So maybe this weekend you need to ask: What am I waiting for? Or maybe you need to adjust your inner calendar. Either way, may you tend to the resource of your time with compassion and care. May your time support you as you move with authenticity in all you do.
Quick Note - If you live in RVA and are in “What are you waiting for” mode consider joining me this Sunday (1/21) at Soulshine Studios for a Vision Board making workshop. It’s a fun and creative way to hone your vision for 2024.
