Listen to Your Heart
Recently I've been revamping my morning practices. I have had a morning meditation practice for years now but like everything, it can get dry at times. A few months ago, I realized I wasn't loving it. I was doing it because I knew it was good for me but it mostly felt like a necessary chore. I don't want my practices to feel like a chore. I want my practices to feel like the most nourishing, delicious, juicy experience I could possibly have. .
To make changes, I had to go to my heart and ask it what it wanted to make my practice feel good again. So I sat down with my journal and asked. My answers were completely unexpected. I wanted an altar to place things on. I wanted to wear a specific shawl or scarf. I wanted to sing or chant. I wanted to have an inspirational reading or an oracle card. And most interesting, I wanted to include scents and flowers. Seriously? My mind could never have come up with these kinds of things. Only my heart could answer like this.
I'm really glad that I asked because I have found ways to incorporate just about all of it into my mornings. Now when I wake up in the dark while everyone else in the house is still in bed, I am excited to go to my cushion. My heart literally expands every time I step into my practice. I feel filled and nourished. I leave my cushion ready for my day with a deep sense of inner joy because my Heart starts the day feeling fulfilled.
In the Bhagavad Gita, we’re taught that of all the paths, the Heart is the highest. This teaching is a permission slip to do as Rumi says, "Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” Other greats like Joseph Campbell declare, “Follow your Bliss” and Howard Thurman urges, “Ask what makes you come alive and go do it.” If all these great teachers from long past are landing on the same instruction for life, surely there is something to it
I invite you to dip in to whatever it is that truly lights your heart up. Maybe it’s singing, maybe it’s storytelling, maybe it’s running, maybe it’s driving, maybe it’s staring out the window... let nothing be off limits. You have the permission to love what you love. Go for it!
